SHUBEIK LUBEIK

trilogy

Set in a fantastical Egypt where wishes are literally for sale, and the more expensive they are the more powerful their ability to fulfill your dreams. SHUBEIK LUBEIK tells the story of three first-class wishes sold at a cornerstore kiosk in Cairo. Originally self-published as an 80-page graphic novel in 2017, Shubeik Lubeik is available as a completed trilogy of 3 graphic novels in Arabic.

Part 1

 Dar el-Mahrousa, Cairo, 2018, SKU 9789773137113

The award-winning first part of the trilogy introduces us to an imagined modern-day Cairo, where first class wishes are sold in bottles, and third class wishes are sold in cans. Unfortunately, the majority of the population can only afford third class wishes, which have been banned in Europe and by the government because they are highly unpredictable and often come true in damaging or ineffective ways.

Aziza is a serious young woman, a hard worker whose life experience has taught her never to let her guard down; still, she allows herself to be wooed by Abdo, a boy she has grown up with who loves Aziza and life wholeheartedly. When Abdo is suddenly taken from her, Aziza, who has never believed in buying wishes before, seeks out a local kiosk which she has been told is selling first class wishes at a deep discount.

Aziza is a story about loss and regret; it is also a story about our deepest desires and the human right to have, and make, wishes.

Part 2

 Dar el-Mahrousa, Cairo, 2019, SKU 9789773137786

In the second part of the trilogy, we meet Nour. Things are easy for Nour - a university student from a rich family majoring in Wishful Thinking and Philosophies, they can’t believe their luck when they find a real, first-class discount wish in a kiosk.

Buying a wish is one thing, but making a wish is quite another. Nour is depressed, and isn’t quite sure how a wish will change that. How exactly do you “fix” depression? How does one wish for happiness? Nour is a story about the pressures of growing up, being a student and coming to terms with one’s role in society.

Part 3

 Dar el-Mahrousa, Cairo, 2021, SKU 9789773138424

In the third and final part of the trilogy, we return to Shokry, the owner of the kiosk selling the three first-class wishes, who has finally paid off his debts.

Shokry has always considered wishes to be blasphemous, but his faith is about to be tested when he discovers that his friend, an old woman from the neighbourhood, is dying from cancer. Will he use his last wish to save her?

Shokry is a story about faith and choices that encompasses many generations and regions of Egypt.

STARRED REVIEW - SHUBEIK LUBEIK

The book is exceptionally imaginative while also being wonderfully grounded in touching human relationships, existential quandaries, and familiar geopolitical and socio-economic dynamics. Mohamed’s art balances perfectly between cartoon and realism, powerfully conveying emotions, and her strong, clean lines gorgeously depict everything from an anguished face to an ornate bottle [...] Mohamed has a great sense of humor, which comes out in footnotes and casual asides throughout. Immensely enjoyable. [read the article]
